“Mer Morte” is a single unbroken thirty-four minute sludge-and-feedback feast that sprawls out even further into the dismal black void that these French doom junkies have been lurking in for the past six years. As with previous releases, Monarch move through massive blackened tar pits of low-end riff and sheets of gluey feedback that are stretched out into monolithic slabs of sound across "Mer Morte", a grim, glacial ultra-doom monolith that crawls at a saurian sub-tempo. It's the most droning, static, deathly doomdrone that Monarch have so far released, not really that propulsive, certainly very little of anything that you could call a "groove", but instead just floating, decaying and corrupted, massive rumbling crush hovering in a sea of yawning blackness.

Nekronology is re-released after 7 years in a lavish 6 panel digipak!! Nekronology is a compilation of mournful musical selections from director Jorg Buttgereit's infamous films, Nekromantik, Nekromantik 2, and Der Todesking. The tracks contained on this release were performed by artist Hermann Kopp. The idea behind the music was to create a dreary atmosphere through a raw, ritualistic sound. You can hear Kopp's signature violin groans, and moog snythesizer during scenes such as the bathtub suicide, the rabbit being skinned alive, and the necrophila sequences.
Nenavist is a vision of the disintegration of the Human, a burst of instinct, a work of isolation and loathing for the man-ruin and the pathetic world of "progress". Death. The incredible misanthropy of the music in no way feels put on; every note of this material seems genuine, and the acrimony the band has towards even its audience seems to drive that point home even further. This is certainly an album that I appreciate in an extremely holistic sense; while there's the occasional catchy riff, this is something that has to be listened to in an almost wholly abstract way. The individual elements of this music are difficult to enjoy on their own, but the synthesis of them into an overall aesthetic is pretty great in how spectacularly it manages to convey its message of absolute bitterness.

Having released a demo, a split, and a live album(?!?!?) prior, this is the bands first full length. Hailing from France, this is an interesting release...to be honest, I have a hard time describing it. At times I think I've figured it out but then the thought escapes me. It's certainly a metal album, most would call it Black Metal, but I don't think that's very fitting...this almost reminds me of listening to Atrocity for the first time years ago. That's a terrible comparison but it's all I've got at the moment. All that said, I really like this...it's familiar somehow but unlike anything I've heard.
Torturous Funeral Doom. Invoking agony & hate and the pleasure in reflecting them towards the humanity - the lethal injection of planet earth - the two lengthy tracks manage to be cruel and mesmerizing and yet still somewhat beautiful in their crudeness. A giant leap after their demos towards the torch bearers of Finland's Funeral Doom genre. Imagine a mix of eerie funeral doom with the ugly crushing sludge attitude and you're somewhere close to the sound of this release.
